WAES Integrated Middle School Curriculum

MYP emphasizes the integration of knowledge, international culture, and international communication, making it the best link to the International Baccalaureate program(IB DP),regarded as the backbone of IB international education. This phase of the course aims to encourage students to effectively connect their acquired knowledge with the world. They are expected to empathize with others and pursue meaningful, purposeful lives. During this stage, these students are encouraged to explore domestic and international issues, becoming creative, critical thinkers who are adept at reflective thought.

The MYP integrated curriculum is centered around the individual, encompassing five areas of interaction and eight subjects that form an interconnected web. It emphasizes interdisciplinary integration, personal development of students, and social practice. The five areas and eight subjects are seamlessly integrated, highlighting the enhancement of students' overall qualities through social practice and thematic activities.

MYP Curriculum Setup

The curriculum comprises both subject-specific courses and interdisciplinary courses.

The curriculum aligns with the national compulsory education standards, offering a balanced set of eight major subject groups to ensure a solid foundation in basic knowledge. It combines Eastern and Western educational approaches, emphasizing both fundamental skills and comprehensive development. This approach aims to cultivate students' knowledge, skills, attitudes, and global awareness necessary for success in a globalized society.

Interdisciplinary courses are guided by the MYP project philosophy and use subject courses as a carrier. They are designed around interdisciplinary themes that are related to the local environment familiar to students. The purpose of these courses is to provide students with opportunities to apply their knowledge from different subjects in an integrated manner, understand the connections between disciplines, abstract commonalities in knowledge, and recognize universal methods for understanding the world.

MYP Education Method

  • The teaching and learning model of exploration, action, and reflection

The teaching approach at IB is inquiry-based learning. At WAES, students are encouraged to ask questions and explore topics in a comfortable environment, ranging from social sciences to natural sciences, from small family units to large global organizations. Students learn and share in ways they excel at, with their individuality fully respected. Here, every child can confidently present themselves. From an early age, they develop the ability to learn independently and solve problems, preparing them for an unknown future. One of the key features of the Middle Years Programme is its emphasis on interdisciplinary teaching and learning.

The Advantages of MYP Integrated Curriculum

The MYP integrated class continues the model of the primary school integration curriculum, with the Chinese national curriculum at its core. It deeply integrates IB philosophy and teaching methods to create a holistic educational model that merges Eastern and Western elements. The integrated curriculum aligns with the primary school project in terms of training objectives, continuing to aim for the ten IB learner profile attributes, with the goal of nurturing Chinese citizens with an international perspective.

The Global Literacy course is a representative of the integrated curriculum, aiming to cultivate students' global competence. It focuses on developing their critical thinking, leadership, initiative, and international understanding. Under this course framework, students will engage in more challenging project-based learning. The expanded course is a key program that WAES has prioritized in its development.
