WAES Elementary Integrated Curriculum

The WAES integrated curriculum is based on the national compulsory education curriculum and framed by the IB Diploma Programme, blending to form a distinctive and advantageous course. It adopts IB teaching and learning strategies and methods to implement curriculum teaching, and conducts systematic evaluation of the curriculum for teaching assessment. This ensures that students not only master important knowledge and skills but also achieve a deep understanding of core concepts and engage in effective learning actions, fully meeting their educational development needs at the primary school stage.

PYP Curriculum Setup

The WAES primary integrated curriculum breaks away from the traditional subject-based teaching model, adopting a concept and transdisciplinary approach to learning. This method ensures that students' learning is interconnected across disciplines, transcending disciplinary boundaries and linking with the real world. The essence of transdisciplinary learning lies in the integration of knowledge to understand the real world, creating authentic learning scenarios for students. It enables students to connect their inquiries with the real world they know, stimulating their intrinsic motivation to learn. Students formulate their own questions, design their own inquiry approaches, and engage in collaborative, discovery-based learning to address problems. This active participation and dynamic interaction foster critical thinking, knowledge construction, and understanding.

PYP Educational Method

  • Exploring Unit - Interdisciplinary Learning

Our school's PYP transdisciplinary thematic learning is a student-centered inquiry-based approach that integrates national curriculum standards to formulate the "Scope and Sequence" for six subject knowledge areas: Language, Mathematics, Science, Individuals and Societies, Arts, Physical Education, Social Education, and Personal Education. In the Unit of Inquiry (UOI), concepts traverse disciplinary boundaries, enhancing the integration of the entire curriculum, and students engage in transdisciplinary learning through action.

The advantages of WAES's integrated curriculum

Interdisciplinary Inquiry Learning

Inquiry, as the primary teaching approach of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP), acknowledges that students are actively engaged in their own learning and responsible for it. The learning within the PYP is conducted with an inquiring spirit, where students connect, explore, and understand the world around them in meaningful ways. This inquiry process fosters student agency and capability, reflecting a distinctive feature of the PYP teaching methodology: respect for student opinions and choices, and student-led learning.

The advantages of the PYP integrated curriculum

At WAES, students not only learn academic knowledge but also understand and master various skills through effective learning methods. These include thinking skills, social skills, communication skills, self-management skills, and research skills.

These skills are valuable not only for student inquiry units but also for various teaching activities both inside and outside the classroom, as well as for life outside of school. They can stimulate students' intrinsic curiosity, prompt them to actively discover and collect problems, and enhance their comprehensive ability to think about and solve problems.
